I began studying yoga on a solitary journey, reading and practicing on my own. Colleen Swantner offered me an Astanga practice and opened my eyes to the intensity of the Asana. I continued inquiry through books: philosophize, history and subtler practices.
Years later I found teachers that inspired and touched my heart in such a way that I felt completely devoted. I studied with Sharon Gannon at the Yasodhara Ashram, embracing the practices of Yoga as the vehicle to unfold and evolve.
Since then, I have studied with David Life, Tias Little, Donna Farhi, Angela Farmer, Victor Van Kooten, and many other teachers. I completed my teacher training with Kathleen Hunt of Samadhi Yoga in Seattle, Washington.
My desire in teaching is to learn and grow with you, to cultivate compassion and loving kindness as an individual and a group force for the benefit of all beings.
Sarah Trelease has been teaching yoga classes, workshops, trainings and retreats since 1999. From 2004 to 2010 she taught teacher trainings at OM yoga in New York City and around the United States and was the director of teacher training at OM during that time. Currently Sarah is the director of Sarah Trelease Yoga Teacher Training and holds trainings in Portland Oregon as well as around the United States.
Her teaching is informed by her quest for deep self-awareness, compassion, and clarity of intention. Drawing on her training and practice in Tibetan Buddhism as well as her studies with modern masters in anatomy and yoga, Sarah offers classes that balance breath, alignment, and flowing movement, developing strength as well as deep clear awareness of the body heart and mind. Sarah holds yoga certifications from Om yoga in New York City, the Nosara Institute and Judith Hanson Lasater (Relax and Renew) as well as a certificate in Contemplative Care Foundations from the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care in New York City.
She completed the advanced studies courses in anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff and Amy Matthews at The Breathing Project in New York City in 2010 and currently studies Body Mind Centering with Amy in Portland, and yoga asana with Todd Jackson at Portland Yoga Arts. Sarah holds a BA from Vassar College. When she is not teaching or studying, Sarah lives, gardens and throws pots on the wheel in Portland with her husband Andrew and cats.
I believe the intelligent language of the body has the capacity to inform, enliven, and amplify the spoken word, and that that relationship is of mutual benefit. It is primarily from that perspective that I inquire into these practices, and the information I continue to receive supports my understanding that it is through collaborative effort that we daily make the world. My intention in sharing this work is interwoven with my desire that the living community receives the benefit of our collective awakening.
I have endless gratitude for all my teachers and count myself especially lucky to have Sarah Trelease as my primary teacher. I continue to study with her, and to her I bow deeply. The various lineages of these practices and the meanderings of my life have lead me to the Shadow Yoga school, to which I am humbled and grateful, and I bow to Mandy Kruger and my good fortune to be in community with her. I bow most tenderly, hands to heart, face to earth, to the North Portland Yoga community. The medicine I receive renders me forever in your service.

Mandy was raised in Las Vegas, which offered both the teachings of destruction and creation. ‘Sin City’ exposed the darker forces of human tendencies while the desert in its vast emptiness and expansive horizons ignited a deeper calling from within to search for meaning in this life. She moved to the Pacific Northwest to complete her undergraduate degree where she also found her love of the yoga practice. Countless yoga trainings as well as basic studies in Ayurveda, a license in Massage therapy, and the greatly influential work of InnerDialogue founded by Solihin Thom. She currently studies under the Shadow Yoga School with Zhander Remete and Emma Balnaves. Mandy recently completed her M.A from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology and Myth. She is grateful to be of service during these times of great upheaval in humanity.
My interest as a movement guide is to offer an embodied experience that respects each individual’s process. Through years of practice I am skilled at seeing bodies and directing attention to what is quiet or unanimated. When we strengthen our ability to pay attention we open up to more possibilities and we bring an experience into existence that did not previously exist. I view asana and all movement practice as creative research involving an open flow of information. We learn more about what we think we know and are in a constant state of surprise from all that we do not know.
I have been a student of dance, yoga and Buddhism for 20 years and I’ve been teaching since 2004. I teach a warm and generous style of movement that is influenced by my interest in contemporary and classical dance forms, Iyengar and Vinyasa yoga and mindfulness. I currently study with Michael Stone, Lama Padma Drimed Norbu, Wendy Hambidge and Todd Jackson. I bring my love of movement, fondness of detail and my own understanding of practice into my teaching.
Allison began practicing yoga at age 12 when she and her mom would follow along to a yoga VHS on their living room floor. Like a familiar old friend, yoga quickly found its permanent place in her life as an immense source of support and healing. With a longstanding desire to move deeper into her own practice, Allison completed her 200 hour teacher training with Saul David Raye in 2014. As her study of yoga continues to evolve, she remains humbled by its sweetness and universal resonance. She feels moved to remind others that we are all sparks of the Divine.
As we move more fully into our physical bodies and cultivate radical self-care, we are able to attune to our authentic power, spirit and truth. Honoring the duality of ha-tha (sun-moon) yoga, Allison strives to lead heart-centered classes that are energizing, dynamic and restorative. She is a nurturing and intuitive teacher, allowing the unique energy of the students to direct the class. Allison strongly encourages the power of the breath to help create inner spaciousness and invites the connection of breath and movement to serve as a guide for creative self-exploration.
Allison resides in Portland, Oregon, where she also works as a holistic wellness consultant, chef, herbalist and artist. She believes we have the capacity to heal ourselves through mindful awareness, intention, and loving energy.
Sara Knapp CYT200 began her journey at the age of 18 looking for a new form of movement. Her first yoga experience was in hot yoga, which sparked something within her that she was looking for. Her practice was inconsistent until she randomly stumbled into Bindu Yoga Studio in West Palm Beach, Florida, a couple of years later and met her teacher, Angel Lucia. From that day forward she was intrigued, wanting more, and desiring a deeper understanding. "From the moment I began I started sensing the profound truths in this practice. It became more than a physical practice and I felt the overall quality of my life becoming enhanced. I craved more of this and began the Seva program, cleaning the studio in trade for classes. A year later I found myself in a 200 hour teacher training program with Angel with no intention of teaching, just to learn more about the practice. But unexpected pathways began revealing themselves and I felt called to teach."
Sara teaches all levels, to guide people into a space of gracefulness, clarity and find the sweet balance of effort and ease. Every class is different and unique. Sara believes that when people come together to practice and to share energy we all grow together and learn from each other.
My explorations in body awareness and my love for physical expression have been present for much of my life. Over twenty years ago, I began my official relationship with movement as a dancer and, fifteen years ago, I began a widely versatile personal yoga practice. My experience has ranged from the raucously physical to the most delicately subtle. As a teacher, I try to find a middle ground where the active body can help illuminate the illusive mind and spirit. I am interested in working deeply with principles of skeletal, muscular and energetic alignment, while also sharing the rich mythical, spiritual, and historical lineage that yoga asana descends from. I received my 200hour training in 2014 with Alison Alstrom at The Loom School of Hatha Yoga, and I am on a perpetual journey to become a more knowledgeable teacher and humble student. Currently I am studying asana with Todd Jackson and anatomy with Renee Sills and am in the process of attaining another 300 hours of teacher training. The time I spend off my mat is usually spent painting, biking and teaching art and movement at the PHAME Academy.
I’m first generation Cambodian, I grew up in Oregon after my parents fled from the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970’s I’ve been privileged enough to have been brought up with Theravada Buddhism and was raised by my grandma/yiey, who was the village healer outside of Takeo, Cambodia. I felt displaced in Salem, Oregon because we were one of three families of color in our neighborhood, I utilized skateboarding and hiking as coping mechanisms for dealing with racism, classism, misogyny.
My life became magical eight years ago when Neko came into my life, she was a Craiglist baby dog with an overbite, and eyes that I would describe as thoughtful whale eyes. She’s become my adventure dog, my best friend, and healer.
Julia Bray is a creator, writer, performer, astrologer, animal lover, dance teacher and yogi. While living in the energy vortex that is New York City, she discovered Kundalini Yoga and has since fallen deeply in love with the practice. She's found that Kundalini ignites her creative work like nothing else, and is so grateful to be able to share the technique with her hometown of Portland. In her daily life, Julia creates theater that engages in themes of spirituality and consciousness through sharp humor and wit, studies astrology with the Portland School of Astrology, and choreographs for children's drama camps. Her yoga classes are reflective of her easy-going and joyful spirit, teaching with a balance between scientific and spiritual expansion. Infused with astrological forecasts and with words inspired by her favorite poets, writers, creators and artists, Julia's classes ignite a quiet fire within, and leave students feeling peaceful but prepared for their day on this radical planet!
I am a multi-disciplinary artist and healer with focus on fiction, poetry, movement, and plant-based medicine. I am co-founder/Editor-in-Chief of Women.Weed.WiFi —an all-womxn of color art collective— a published author, community organizer, and connector.
My personal yoga mission statement is to share the tools for self-healing and communal healing at the mental, physical, and spiritual levels through the practice of pranayama and vinyasa.
Years after my first yoga experience that felt inauthentic to me, I was intrigued to try the practice again as I was developing a close friendship with a yoga instructor. As a dancer, I was aware of the ways in which this was a moving meditation, and loved the graceful dedication to self and beyond through the practice. As someone who has studied and practiced Buddhist meditation since high school, I loved the full integration of the mental, physical, and spiritual that yoga offered.
I use yoga for the amazing physical benefits of releasing tension in my body, detoxing my skin, maintaining my flexibility, building body strength, increasing my balance, and more! I also use yoga to help me heal from ancestral and personal traumas, and as a much treasured and incomparable tool for healthy, holistic living. Since completing my teacher training, I have come into my full power as a healer, in understanding that I’ve been on the Eight Limbed Path my whole life even before I was conscious of that fact.
I began teaching yoga in 2006 after becoming certified to teach through the Whole Yoga School of Shambhava Yoga (a Tantric school of Kashmir Shavism) in Colorado. I earned a 500 hour, advanced teacher training with Kira Ryder in 2015. My classes are filled with stories, songs, chants, meditation, breath-work and philosophy. I encourage students to trust the body’s wisdom as they work through postures, finding the balance of sweetness and steadiness in the pose to achieve an expansive sense of alignment.
Many teachers have given me skillful and grace-filled instructions in Yoga, meditation and Ayurveda over the past twenty years of practice. I love and thank them all. I bow to the invisible guru who brought me to this practice in the first place. My most influential human teachers are Erich Schiffmann, Kira Ryder, Patricia Sullivan, Todd Jackson and Ravi Ravindra. My most potent teachers are my husband, my daughter and our new puppy.
Students who attend my classes can expect sound, breath and meditation practices in addition to healing, integrated movement. Since 2009, I have shared full-length videos and audio recordings of my classes at sunroseyoga.com. I create spaces and experiences for transformative practice in-person and online. In 2015, I joined the teaching family of Yoga Anytime.
My hope is that students leave time with me with a greater appreciation of the “long-view” that yoga invites us to take, a more compassionate view of themselves and others.
My practice began in Massachusetts in 2003 as a high school gym elective. I didn't begin to take the practice seriously until 2010 following a difficult transition. Yoga humbled me since the moment I needed to confront myself, and I haven't looked back since! In 2013 I stepped into my 200HR teacher training with Roman Szpond and Lauren Star of Inner Strength Studios in Watertown MA. Roman's studio offered me a space to grow upwards and inwards; and my training helped me carve out a style of teaching vinyasa krama classes that weave in dharma with a modern twist. I have studied Ashtanga, Baptiste, Power Yoga, and Iyengar lineages; I also enjoy Kundalini, Restorative, and Yin classes to balance out the overall Yang nature of a busy lifestyle. My appreciation for the myriad ways / styles / voices of this practice keeps me fresh and humbled; I hope to leave students feeling the same. I am soothed by mantra, and I enjoy music as much as I enjoy silence. In my classes I aim to weave playfulness with moments of exploration, and also leave space for quiet contemplation of our felt experiences. I am truly inspired by every moment thanks to this powerful practice.
Growing up queer had afforded Justin with a unique outlook on expression. Like many folks who don’t fit well within societal constructs, he learned to limit and stifle much of himself.
It wasn’t until yoga touched his life in 2006 that he began to bloom. Through yoga he discovered the body is our outward expression of authentic self, and only through the full spectrum of physical and emotional expression can we embrace our authenticity.
As an actor, Justin has maintained a strong connection to his performance through body movement and physicality. He was drawn deeply to the philosophical teachings of improv and its effectiveness as a form of moving meditation. Being present is a core tenant of both of yoga and improv, and Justin believes it is through this connection that each can inform the other in limitless ways.
Touring around the country allowed him to practice with many teachers and studios, but it was in Portland that he found a familiar home. Completing his 200-hr training with Sarahjoy Marsh, he has since been inspired to share mindfulness practice with others in hopes of giving them what he had so fortunately received with yoga - a joyful connection to self.
Marcus Stanback has been a dedicated student of yoga since his exposure to the practice in 2016. Originally beginning yoga to relieve back pain, he saw benefits from the connection of breath to movement and mindfulness. As a former D1 athlete, he enjoys finding ways to use yoga to create a sustainable amount of challenge while maintaining full body awareness. He aims to embody and share subtle aspects of yoga through breath work and a sharper understanding of the asanas. He sees the practice of yoga as an opportunity for us to become aware of our own experience while uniting with our environment as we learn and grow.
